Using the Guild's Literature ... 'Comfort Boxes'

Picture
My name is Jane Lees, I am the Chaplain at Brookfield Care Home in Oxford, which is part of MHA homes and schemes (Methodist Housing Association). Though Methodist in origin and values, there are residents here from different denominations and different faiths, as well as those with no professed faith.

We have recently introduced ‘comfort boxes’ in our End of Life care. These are placed in the rooms of those who are reaching the end of their lives, and we let both the resident and their loved ones know about how they can use them.

The contents in the box may include items such as a hairbrush, room scent or mouth care, or even a soft toy.
There is also a spiritual element added depending on the faith of the person. This can include items such as a holding cross, or if the person is of a different faith, something appropriate to that, for example Muslim prayer beads.

I came across the Guild of All Souls prayer cards while looking for some quality prayers and verses that are appropriate for someone at the end of their life. I was impressed by the variety and content of these cards, also that they were offered free of charge!

The comfort boxes have been in use for a couple of months - and recently one of them was greatly appreciated by a Christian lady and her family, who made use of the cards to pray with her. This lady had been through a great deal in her life, including a spell of being homeless, yet her faith remained strong to the end, and the prayer cards in the comfort box were very meaningful to her.

I would like to thank the Guild of All Souls for the provision of the cards which have already brought blessing to residents at Brookfield.
